Given the continual history of violence and tragedy at Rikers Island, today’s terrible loss of life is yet another reminder that dramatic changes are needed to provide safety for all and comprehensive criminal justice reform. It is equally a reminder that we urgently need collaborative engagement between the community and law enforcement before we close Rikers Island and open facilities so that justice is fair, incarcerated individuals and law enforcement officials receive services to improve their quality of life and we ensure that safety, health and protection are prioritized for all.
