Statement in Celebration of Labor Day
Today, we celebrate Labor Day and recognize labor activists and the contributions they have made towards the collective strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Once again, we say “thank you” to our Sisters and Brothers in the Labor Movement.
Every American worker is better off because of the Labor Movement’s efforts to protect the right to collectively bargain, secure better benefits, demand higher wages, strengthen workers’ rights, fight for our families, and work to ensure fairness and equity in workplace policies.
As the son of a father who worked as a maintenance supervisor and member of 1199SEIU, I am no stranger to the ongoing need for strong unions to stand up for workers and address the struggles they face.
From victories for workers in New York with improved contracts to teachers in West Virginia demanding better wages, we continue to see the necessity of strong, organized unions. They have become even more crucial with the recent Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME and the appalling trade war launched by the Trump Administration.
Now, more than ever, we need to stand united together in support of labor union members and our families to promote workers organizing and mobilizing. Each and every day, we should commit to advancing the Labor Movement and fighting for economic fairness and justice for all workers and their families.
As we recognize the power of the Labor Movement, let us reflect on the dedication and sacrifices made by all of our union members, which has positively impacted the lives of millions of people.
Happy Labor Day!
